Know Your Space
Visit your dorm room and measure the area before purchases are made. Be sure containers and storage units will fit in the intended space. Also, determine if containers will accommodate the items intended for use.

Go Vertical
Can shelves be added above the desk? Is there a naked wall screaming “store something on me!”? Always take advantage of vertical storage when possible.

Do Not Duplicate Items
Contact your roommate before bringing a television, microwave, or refrigerator.

The Student Desk

Drawers are important to have at your desk. A small drawer will keep clutter such as pens, stapler and staples, paper clips, etc off the desk and within reach.

Papers are easy to control in a file drawer or file box. Utilize hanging files and a simple alphabetical system to easily find study papers. A trash basket should be at your desk. Keep paper next to printer and fax.

Storage for College

dorm closet

Clothes
Be selective when packing for school. Bring items that are easy to mix to create different outfits; and items for only one season. Utilize plastic hangers and hang like items together. Pants, skirts, shirts, & coats will be easier to find. If a single rod is high enough, utilize a double hang rod to give more hanging space.

Storage
If there is space for a table or cart, use one with drawers or shelves to make use of the space underneath. Stacking cubes are an inexpensive and practical way to create storage.
Plastic drawer units in the bottom of closets provide easy access for items without digging in the back of closets.

Down-under
Use bed risers and utilize the space underneath the bed. Sheets and towels can be stored in plastic “under bed” containers for easy access.
